What is the difference between mulching and brush cutting? And
which service do I need?
Mulching and brush cutting are both effective land-clearing
methods, but they serve different purposes depending on your goals for the
property and the cost between them is drastically different.
Mulching uses specialized forestry equipment to grind trees,
saplings, and heavy brush into mulch that is left on the ground. This method
clears and improves land at the same time—returning nutrients to the soil,
reducing erosion, and leaving a clean, park-like finish. It’s ideal for overgrown areas, small
trees, thick underbrush, fence lines, trails, and property reclamation. The
equipment to do mulching is extremely expensive to acquire and maintain and
many people underestimate, or, are completely unaware of what it requires to do
this type of service correctly and safely.
Brush cutting (also called bush hogging) uses rotary cutters to
mow down grass, weeds, and light brush close to the ground. It’s best for maintaining open areas
such as fields, pastures, and lots where vegetation is mostly grass or small
growth rather than woody material. While our brush cutters can effectively cut
trees up to 3” inches diameter, this process does not leave as fine of material
as mulching in the finished product, but brush cutting is a much more
affordable option compared to mulching making this option the most popular of
the two.
Which service do you need?
Mulching may be a good option if your
property has never been maintained and has extremely dense brush, invasive
growth, saplings, or trees greater than 3” in diameter and you want
long-lasting, complete clearing with minimal debris.
Brush cutting may be a good option if
your land is mostly grass or smaller trees such as a field that hasn’t been
maintained in 3-4 years, or if you just need routine maintenance or mowing.
Brush cutting is also good for thinning out wooded areas where landowners want
to keep the larger trees but thin out the undergrowth - this is a great option
for hunters!
